First Aid When Seeing Your Little One Fever Seizures

Fever in some children can be followed by seizures. This condition is known as febrile seizures. When facing it, Mother is advised to be vigilant but remain calm. Therefore, you need to know the first aid step for your little one who has a febrile seizure.

Febrile seizures can afflict children aged 3 months to 5 years, even though children aged 1 to 1.5 years experience it more commonly. The cause of the body of a child's seizure during a fever is not known for certain, but this is known to be associated with an increase in body temperature that is too fast and the ability of the child's body to adapt to increased body temperature.

Condition of Children Experiencing Fever Seizures

Before learning how to help your little one, you need to know how to determine whether your child has a febrile seizure or not. The following symptoms can help you recognize febrile seizures in your little one:

  • Body temperature rises to more than 38 °.
  • The whole body, especially the legs and arms, looks trembling, stiff, or jerking uncontrollably.
  • The little one groaned, biting his tongue hard, or urinating suddenly, and his eyes rolled upward.
  • The Little One doesn't respond to Mother, for example not answering when invited to play or talk.
  • The little one faints or loses consciousness after a seizure.

Steps for First Aid when a Child has a Fever Seizure

When you see your child having a febrile seizure, you are advised not to panic. The mother is expected to remain calm, in order to be able to give her first aid well.

The following are some steps to help a child who has a febrile seizure:

  • Place the child in a flat place.
  • The place should be spacious and free, so that children will not be hit or crushed by certain objects during seizures.
  • Position the child to sleep sideways, to prevent choking during seizures.
  • Loosen the clothes, especially on the neck.
  • Do not force the child's body to resist movement. Just keep your body safe.
  • Do not put anything into his mouth, including drinks or drugs.
  • Say soothing words so that the child feels more comfortable.
  • Note how long the child has a seizure.
  • Observe his condition during a seizure, especially if he has difficulty breathing or his face becomes pale and bluish. This indicates that he lacks oxygen and needs medical treatment as soon as possible.
  • If possible, record the event when the child is having a seizure, so the doctor can know exactly what kind of seizure the child is experiencing.

Febrile seizures generally last 1-2 minutes. After that, the child may become more fussy and confused for several hours, before he is exhausted and finally falls asleep.

Conditions for Fever Seizures that Need Emergency Management

After giving first aid, Mother still needs to take the Little One to the doctor even though the seizure has stopped. This is important, so that the doctor can check the condition of the child and find out the cause of the seizures he experienced.

The mother even needs to immediately bring her to the doctor or call an ambulance if she experiences:

  • Seizures for more than 5 minutes.
  • Seizures are only on a number of body parts, not all.
  • Difficulty breathing and face or lips become bluish.
  • Repeated seizures within 24 hours.

Most febrile seizures in children are not dangerous and are not a sign of epilepsy or brain damage. Febrile seizures also do not cause children to experience a decrease in learning abilities or mental disorders.

However, Mother still needs to be vigilant. In some rare cases, fever followed by seizures can be a sign of meningitis or other serious disorders.

When your child has a seizure, you need to give first aid to febrile seizures correctly. Therefore, try to stay calm. If the child has a febrile seizure condition that needs emergency help, immediately take it to the doctor to get treatment.
